COVID-19 Mask Update

Jan 4, 2022

On December 13, 2021, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) updated its mask mandate to require mask wearing for all individuals in all indoor public settings, regardless of vaccination status. As you know, the District implemented an indoor mask mandate in June 2021. Our highest priority remains the health and welfare of our students and employees. Therefore, we will continue to require indoor mask wearing for all individuals until community transmission of the Coronavirus is minimal, and our local health professionals recommend lifting this requirement.

An important note on cloth masks: According to the CDC, the filtration effectiveness of cloths masks is generally lower than that of medical-grade masks. With the highly contagious Omicron variant circulating throughout the state, the CDPH encourages masks that offer a good fit and good filtration, such as a surgical mask or KN95 mask. Following this direction, the District strongly encourages using these masks instead of cloth. KN95 and surgical masks will be made available to our employees and students throughout our facilities while we have a mask mandate in effect. Please remember to cover your mouth and nose completely when wearing your mask.

We will continue to provide you with updates and recommendations as new information becomes available. Please continue to follow the District and College guidance, stay safe, and healthy, and have a successful spring semester! I'm looking forward to seeing many of you at Convocation either in person or via Zoom this week.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carole Goldsmith, Ed.D.
