Chancellor's Message Regarding Mass Shooting in Texas

May 25, 2022

Dear State Center Community College District students, faculty, staff and community members,

As you know, our nation experienced another horrific act of unspeakable violence. Yesterday, there was a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas which killed 19 children and two teachers. We send our condolences to the family and friends of those killed and wounded.

It is truly a tragedy when these senseless killings take place and rob the lives of young children and their teachers. Every child should feel safe going to school. There are many suggestions that want to address this type of violence.  My hope is something can be done quickly and that our legislators can reach some kind of agreement to keep us safe and to prevent another parent and loved one from having to experience this unbearable loss.

In the meantime, there are things we can do, get involved with our youth, show compassion for the disenfranchised, and if you see something, say something.

Yesterday's incident was shocking and weighs heavily on our hearts. To all our students, faculty and staff, who are feeling the weight of this tragedy, know that your SCCCD family is here to support you.  If you’re a student, we have people you can talk to about these difficult times. You can reach someone on our campuses.  SCCCD employees have access to confidential resources through the Employee Assistance Program, free of charge.

Be well. Take care of each other.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carole Goldsmith

Chancellor
