2020 Decennial Census Trustee Area Re-Districting

Jul 1, 2021

State Center Community College District is required to review its trustee area boundaries to maintain a proper population balance every ten years, following the decennial census. The District’s current trustee areas have not been updated since December 2011. The Census Bureau expects to release data from the 2020 Decennial Census by September 30, 2021. This is later than usual because of delays in gathering and processing data experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The census data may reflect population shifts that require adjustments to the District’s internal trustee area boundaries. However, it is also possible that no adjustments may be needed.

The District has retained attorney David Soldani of Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Rudd & Romo to advise on redistricting legal requirements and demographer Larry Ferchaw of Cooperative Strategies to analyze the census data and to assist with developing boundary maps to ensure each trustee area maintains a proper population balance.

At the Board of Trustees meeting on August 3, 2021, the District will present an overview of the redistricting timeline and process which will include opportunities for public participation. District staff anticipate presenting the Board of Trustees with options for approving changes, if any, to the trustee area boundaries in late 2021 or early 2022.
