Pride Month Participation

May 31, 2023

Good morning colleagues,

I hope this message finds you well. As we approach the month of June, I want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate Pride Month.  This annual observance provides an opportunity for us to show our support for the LGBTQ+ community and reaffirm our commitment to fostering an equitable, inclusive environment where all students and employees can thrive.

Pride Month is not only a time for celebration, but also a reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community.  It is essential that we continue to stand together in solidarity, advocating for equality, acceptance, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

I invite each of you to join me in commemorating Pride Month by actively promoting a safe and inclusive atmosphere throughout our District.  Let us strive to create an environment where everyone feels valued, affirmed, and empowered to be their authentic selves.  This includes not only our LGBTQ+ students but also our LGBTQ+ staff and faculty members who contribute their unique perspectives and talents to our community.

There are various ways in which one can participate in Pride Month.  Consider attending local Pride events, such as the Pride Parade held on this Saturday in the Tower District.  Perhaps engaging in conversations that foster understanding and empathy.  Or even something as simple as using the attached Zoom background to visibly demonstrate support, which sends a powerful message of acceptance and love to all members of our State Center community.

While none of this is required, or mandated, I do encourage you to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, cultural or ethnic background or religious beliefs.

Let us also use this occasion to reflect on our institutional policies and practices, ensuring that they align with our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusivity, and access, as well as respect and kindness.

By continually striving to improve, we can ensure that our colleges and District remain an institution that embraces diversity and empowers everyone to thrive.

Thank you for your dedication to our students, colleagues, and our community, and for joining me in celebrating Pride Month. Together, we can make a lasting difference and create an environment that champions equality and fosters the success of all individuals.

Wishing you a joyful and meaningful Pride Month.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carole Goldsmith
